Veterans' Appreciation Muster

The newly formed Coweta Commission on Veteran’s Affairs, in association with the American Legion, AMVETS, VFW, and Marine Corps League presented a "Veterans Appreciation Muster" on October 16, 2010 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Newnan. 

The purpose of the Muster was to raise awareness within Coweta County of the contributions and sacrifices made by our military men and women on our behalf.  Muster means "Gathering" and that is what we did. We gathered the citizens of our County around the newly renovated Coweta County Courthouse where we had the history of our military on display. The community came, saw, and talked to veterans of various eras, viewed their memorabilia displays, and heard some of their heartwarming experiences.

The opening ceremony was at 10:00 AM at Veteran’s Plaza located at the intersection of Jackson Street and Temple Avenue in Newnan.  The event included:

  • The National Anthem performed by the Atkinson Elementary School Choir,
  • A performance by the Men’s Ensemble from First Baptist Church, Newnan, performing God Bless America and America the Beautiful, 
  • Brigadier General Don Harvel, USAF, related the history of veterans in Coweta County
  • Congressman Lynn Westmoreland honor Coweta County and the City of Newnan for their support of veterans with the presentation of flags that were flown over our Nation's Capitol on July 4, 2010
  • A  brief remembrance honoring Brigadier General Rob Tornow, USAF,  and Mr. Harold Barron, both true patriots and major contributors to the quality of life in Coweta County,
  • Presentation of the Colors by Sons of the American Revolution Re-enactors and a musket salute
At least one representative from each of the five military services participated in the ceremony.  It concluded with a helicopter flyby.

At 11:oo AM, events moved to the courthouse square in Newnan. There people:

  • Toured the newly renovated Coweta County Courthouse
  • Listened to stories by members of the Sons of the American Revolution dressed in period costumes
  • Heard military related presentations
  • Talked to veterans from WW II forward and viewed their cherished memorabilia
  • Visited with military and civilian service organizations who were available to answer questions about benefits and offered information as to what their organization can provide to veterans
  • Enjoyed the food and products of vendors as they listened to the Newnan High School Band with their rendition of traditional military favorites
  • Visited with the Newnan/Coweta Historical Society who is available to receive any military memorabilia that  citizens may have and wish to donate to the Society,
  • Stopped by Sponsor’s Row and say thanks to our sponsors who will be generously providing financial support to make this day possible. 
This event provided an opportunity for the community to interact with our veterans and to listen to their stories.

Senate Approves Renaming Post Offices in Honor of Fallen Soldiers

On Wednesday, April 23rd, the Senate approved legislation to rename several U.S. Post Offices in Georgia in honor of fallen soldiers. The U.S. Post Office located at 3035 Stone Mountain Street in Lithonia, GA, will be renamed the “Specialist Jamaal RaShard Addison Post Office Building.” The U.S. Post Office located at 5815 McLeod Street in Lula, GA, will be renamed the “Private Johnathon Millican Lula Post Office.” The U.S. Post Office located at 116 Helen Highway in Cleveland, GA, will be renamed the “Sgt. Jason Harkins Post Office Building.” These men served without desire for credit, but on behalf of their country and everything positive that we stand for. Breakfast at the Post

Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition

A local high school student could win a trip to Washington, DC and a $30,000 scholarship. Commander Jeff Carroll of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2667 announced the kick-off of this year's VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary "Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition." High school students in this area have the opportunity to compete in the annual audio essay competition and win thousands of dollars in scholarships, a trip to Washington, DC, as well as dozens of other awards. Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Deadline for entries at the Post is November 1st. Post winners advance to District. District winners compete in the state competition. The state winner will enjoy a four-day tour of Washington, DC along with the winners from every state, the District of Columbia, the Pacific Areas, Latin America/Caribbean, and Europe.
