Veterans Employment Seminar March 14

The first Veterans Employment Seminar of the year will be March 14 from 1-3 p.m. This seminar is among several to be held for veterans in 2012. The session will be facilitated by Peter Ludlow, manager of the Newnan office of the Georgia Department of Labor. Ludlow, along with Alan Hurd of the DOL office will be explaining the new Gold Card Veterans Preference Programs for Post-9/11 veterans that are currently available. A main concern is that post 9/11 veterans need to be aware of specific programs available to veterans through the Department of Labor. The DOL and sponsoring veterans organizations are interested to hear the issues directly from the veterans who are facing obstacles in finding employment. Hank Berkowitz, local Veterans Service Officer for the sponsoring veterans organizations, is coordinating the seminar events. "We are interested to hear from veterans whether the current DOL programs meet their needs," said Berkowitz. "We recognize that Post 9/...

National Guard Sendoff on April 13

On April 13, Georgia National Guard's 48th Infantry Brigade Bravo Company Second Battalion will leave Newnan on the first leg of their deployment to Afghanistan. The community is encouraged to show support by lining the streets of Newnan to see them off. The company will travel to Camp Shelby, Miss., on April 13. The brigade will remain in Mississippi until the end of May/beginning of June, at which time they will deploy to Afghanistan. Approximately 130 soldiers are attached to the local brigade, which is based in Newnan at the Jackson-Pless National Guard Armory next to Newnan High School. Their mission abroad during the year-long tour will be to train and mentor the Afghan National Army. Roughly half of the 130 soldiers went with the brigade to Iraq in 2005. According to Newnan Police Chief Douglas L. "Buster" Meadows, the unit is scheduled to depart the armory at 10 a.m. -- though that time is subject to change -- and the route will take them to the Court ...

GMExtendedWarranty.com Honors America's Military

The GM Extended Warranty division of Roberson Pontiac-Buick-GMC in Jesup, GA is once again extending its support for the VFW National Home for Children and our nation's military members and veterans during the month of May. May is National Military Appreciation Month. It's the perfect time to say "thank you" to the men and women serving our country. So ExtendedGMWarranty.com has joined forces with an ambitious high school student named Shauna Fleming. Shauna wanted to say "thanks" to the U.S. troops. But she didn't want hers to be the only voice they heard. She wanted the volume of hundreds of thousands of voices. Maybe even more. As founder of A Million Thanks, Shauna has led a year-round campaign to send a thank you letter to every single member of the military. Her goal was a million letters--and when her millionth letter was collected, the President invited her to the Oval Office to thank and congratulate her. Today, Shauna has collected over 2.6 mi...

VFW Appeals for Condition-Free Funding for Iraq

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Wednesday presented Capitol Hill lawmakers with an appeal from more than 2,700 troops urging Congress to drop plans for withdrawal from Iraq. The "Appeal for Courage" has been collecting signatures since February, with the goal of lobbying lawmakers to back off plans for withdrawal timetables or funding caveats. Organizer Lt. Jason Nichols, a 33-year-old naval projects officer who has been in Baghdad since mid-January, said he has been pleased with the response. See full article at www.EStripes.com
