East Coweta High School teacher Elizabeth Thompson , sponsored by our Post, was recognized as the co-winner of the Georgia VFW High School Teacher of the Year. Congratulations Ms. Thompson!

The Newnan High School History Department presented a check from their Veterans Support 5k held on Armed Forces Day. They presented a check for $12,000 to help support local veterans. Steve Quesinberry and Frankie Henderson present the check to VFW Post 2667 Commander John Skinner during our Memorial Day program.

Commander John Skinner presented awards at the East Coweta HS Marine Corps JROTC awards tonight. As usual, they put on an outstanding progrom.

We had an excellent time at this event. Maj Hendrix & MSgt Cox manage an excellent awards program. Post Jr Vice Commander Tom Fetchet presented the awards. The two cadets in the picture are Nicol A. Vanegas, who received the Scholastic Excellence, and Jeremy A. Collins, who received the Military Excellence award. Well done, cadets!

Two teachers in the Coweta County School System have been named Veterans of Foreign Wars 2017 Teachers of the Year for the state of Georgia. John Garner of Newnan High School and Samantha Clark of Arnall Middle School – both history teachers – were nominated for the VFW’s National Citizenship Education Teacher Award by fellow teachers. The two were awarded the honor locally by VFW Post 2667 in Newnan in February, and later won at the Georgia VFW 5th District level. This week, both teachers were notified that they had won at the state level for the respective categories – Garner at the high school level and Clark at the middle school level. Newnan High School held its inaugural Military Enlistee Celebration Night at the Newnan National Guard Armory recently. The event honored NHS students who have pledged to serve in the armed forces. One senior, Andrew Lewis, had an even bigger reason to celebrate: He has been awarded a full U.S. Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship to Auburn University. Our Elementary Teacher of the Year was Myra Coursey from Jefferson Parkway Elementary School. Myra is a K-5 Music Teacher who continually promotes patriotism through music to her students. Newnan High School teacher John Garner was presented with a Veteran of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year award earlier this week. Garner is a history teacher at the local high school and serves as the main sponsor of the History Bowl team, a sponsor of the History Club, and co-head coach of the wresting team. The VFW has recognized top educators in elementary, middle and high school since 1999, focusing on instructors who teach citizenship and promote patriotism. In addition to local and state recognition, award winners receive $2,000, divided between the educator and the school. A Newnan Girl Scout has been named Georgia’s Scout of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Georgia. The VFW’s Scout of the Year Program honors Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who have displayed “standout citizenship, patriotism, and the love of country.” Scouts are rewarded through the program with college scholarships of up to $5,000. Seventeen-year-old Ansley Knight is a rising senior at Newnan High School (NHS) and was nominated for Scout of the Year through Newnan’s VFW Post 2667. There she earned Scout of the Year locally and was later named Georgia’s Scout of the Year. “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized for my participation and volunteer hours accumulated in my 11 years of scouting,” Knight said. “I am proud to represent my fellow Girl Scouts and to be chosen out of all Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Venture Scouts that have earned their highest awards.” Knight is a member of Girl Scout Troop 19394 and has been involved with the organization s...

Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge autographed books and documents as presented to them when they met to expand knowledge of the battle among veterans and other individuals interested in the largest land battle ever fought by the U. S. Army. The meeting was open to veterans, historians, teachers, students and other interested parties and was held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Friday, November 5, at the Coweta Veterans Club in Newnan. The battle began December 16, 1944 in the Belgium and Luxembourg Ardennes. 81,000 Americans were killed, captured or wounded. All classes of combat units of the Army & Air Corps were involved.

The children of military personnel who died in the line of duty since Sept. 10, 2001 can apply for an educational scholarship similar to the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. Benefits are retroactive to Aug. 1, 2009, VA begins accepting applications for the Fry scholarship on May 1, 2010. For more information or assistance applying, call toll-free 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551), or visit the VA GI Bill Website at http://www.gibill.va.gov/ . VA estimates nearly 1,500 children will receive benefits under the Fry scholarship program in 2010. Recipients have 15 years to use their benefits, beginning on their 18th birthdays, through their 33rd birthdays. Eligible children attending institutions of higher learning may receive payments to cover their tuition and fees up to the highest amounts charged by a public, in-state undergraduate institution.  A monthly living allowance and stipend for books and supplies are also paid under this program. The VFW's National Citizenship Education Teachers' Award recognizes the nation's top elementary, junior high, and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America's history and traditions. Nearly 1,000 teachers are from every state, the District of Columbia and overseas. Fellow teachers, supervisors or other interested individuals can submit nominations by November 1 to your local Post. VFW's National citizenship education teacher awards include: $1,000 cash award for professional development to each of the top K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 teachers; $1,000 award for each winning teacher's school; plaques for both the winning teacher and school; an all-expense-paid trip to attend the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary National Community Service Conference in Washington, D.C. A local student could win a $10,000 U.S. savings bond. Commander Jeff Carroll of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2667, announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition.” Students in grades 6-8 in this area have the opportunity to compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars in U.S. Savings Bonds and a trip to be honored at the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Community Service Conference. Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Post winners advance to District. District winners compete in the state competition. The state winners compete for more than $75,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds and an all-expenses trip to Washington, DC. Each year more than 130,000 students participate in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition. Students are invited to write a 300-400 word essay on a patriotic theme.
